Making peace in the long-troubled Middle East is likely to be one of the top priorities of the next American president. He will need to take account of the important lessons from past attempts, which are described and analyzed here in a gripping book by a renowned expert who served twice as U.S. ambassador to Israel and as Middle East adviser to President Clinton.

Martin Indyk draws on his many years of intense involvement in the region to provide the inside story of the last time the United States employed sustained diplomacy to end the Arab-Israeli conflict and change the behavior of rogue regimes in Iraq and Iran.

Innocent Abroad is an insightful history and a poignant memoir. Indyk provides a fascinating examination of the ironic consequences when American naïveté meets Middle Eastern cynicism in the region's political bazaars. He dissects the very different strategies of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush to explain why they both faced such difficulties remaking the Middle East in their images of a more peaceful or democratic place. He provides new details of the breakdown of the Arab-Israeli peace talks at Camp David, of the CIA's failure to overthrow Saddam Hussein, and of Clinton's attempts to negotiate with Iran's president.

Indyk takes us inside the Oval Office, the Situation Room, the palaces of Arab potentates, and the offices of Israeli prime ministers. He draws intimate portraits of the American, Israeli, and Arab leaders he worked with, including Israel's Yitzhak Rabin, Ehud Barak, and Ariel Sharon; the PLO's Yasser Arafat; Egypt's Hosni Mubarak; and Syria's Hafez al-Asad. He describes in vivid detail high-level meetings, demonstrating how difficult it is for American presidents to understand the motives and intentions of Middle Eastern leaders and how easy it is for them to miss those rare moments when these leaders are willing to act in ways that can produce breakthroughs to peace.

Innocent Abroad is an extraordinarily candid and enthralling account, crucially important in grasping the obstacles that have confounded the efforts of recent presidents. As a new administration takes power, this experienced diplomat distills the lessons of past failures to chart a new way forward that will be required reading.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Martin Indyk is the Director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at The Brookings Institution. Born in England and educated in Australia, he migrated to the United States in 1982. As President Bill Clinton's Middle East advisor on the National Security Council, as Assistant Secretary for Near East Affairs in the State Department, and as one of America's leading diplomats, he has helped develop Middle East policy in Washington's highest offices, as well as implement it on the region's front lines. In March 1995, Clinton dispatched Indyk to Israel as U.S. amabassador to work with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on the peace process. He returned to Israel as ambassador in March 2000 to work with Ehud Barak and Yasser Arafat on a renewed effort to achieve comprehensive peace. He also served there for the first six months of George W. Bush's presidency.

Great Looking Lightweight Golf Pants
Color: Khaki, Size: 38W x 32L, Color: Khaki, Size: 38W x 32L
This is a great looking pair of lightweight golf pants from M MAELREG. They’re tailored from a Polyester and Spandex blend (94% - 6%) in an attractive weave. I selected the Khaki version and the pants are lightweight, very comfortable and fit true to size. They have a button and zipper fly closure with a silicone ‘gripper’ on the inside waistband, which helps hold the pants in place if you decide not to wear a belt. But if you do wear a belt, the pants have 6 total belt loops, including a pair at the rear (often not found on many pants today). They have 2 front pockets and a hidden pocket with a zipper closure on the right side. The 2 back pockets are stitched shut. Since I rarely use back pockets on any pants or jeans that I wear, that’s not an issue for me. But if you do use them, you’ll need to cut them open yourself. (I would suggest carefully using an X-Acto type knife.) These versatile pants can be worn dressed up for business attire or down for leisure. (In other words, you don’t have to be a golfer to wear them. LOL!) And the quality, fit and pricing of the pants are comparable to many of the top national brands like Nike, Callaway and PGA Tour.

Sharp Style and All-Day Comfort on and Off Course
Color: Iron Grey, Size: 32W x 32L, Color: Iron Grey, Size: 32W x 32L
I have worn a lot of golf and casual pants over the years, and these MAELREG pants truly impressed me from the moment I put them on. The fit is tailored without feeling restrictive, and the lightweight stretch fabric moves comfortably whether I’m walking around the lake with my Labrador, spending time with family, or heading out for dinner. They have a clean, polished appearance that works just as well for business casual settings as they do for golf outings. What I appreciate most is how comfortable they stay throughout the day. The moisture-wicking and quick-dry material kept me cool in the Florida heat, and the water-resistant finish handled light splashes and unexpected weather without any problem. The waistband stays secure and comfortable, and the overall fit gives a sharp, athletic look without being too tight. The pocket design is also very practical. I like having the zipper pocket for valuables while still getting plenty of room in the front and back pockets for everyday essentials. The fabric feels durable yet soft, and the quality is better than I expected for the price. These pants have quickly become one of my favorite pairs because they combine comfort, flexibility, and a refined appearance so well. MAELREG delivered a stylish, well-made product that looks great and performs even better.

Golf pants
Color: Iron Grey, Size: 36W x 34L, Color: Iron Grey, Size: 36W x 34L
For a generic pair of golf pants, these are actually quite good, though the fit isn't entirely perfect. The overall quality of the material surprised me; it feels durable, has a nice stretch to it, and looks good enough for the course or a casual Friday. The length was also spot-on right out of the package. However, they felt slightly small in the waist. At an okay price point, they are a solid budget option. I can’t speak for longevity yet, but they seem fine.
