  • HISTORY ASPECTS:
  • The Saab JAS 39A Gripen was designed as a lightweight, multirole fighter capable of defending Sweden’s airspace while also conducting strike and reconnaissance missions. Developed by Saab AB, the Gripen combined advanced avionics, data-link integration, and short takeoff performance tailored to Sweden’s dispersed basing doctrine. At F 7 Skaraborg Wing, based at Såtenäs Air Base, the aircraft formed a central component of Sweden’s modern air defense network, responsible for readiness alerts, training, and participation in multinational exercises.
  • In 2006, an F 7 Wing Gripen received the distinctive “Cat’s Paw” livery, a special scheme that stood out during air displays and commemorative events. The design highlighted the squadron’s identity and esprit de corps while maintaining the aircraft’s operational configuration. Aircraft from F 7 regularly conducted Baltic Sea patrols, quick-reaction intercept missions, and joint exercises with NATO and partner nations, demonstrating Sweden’s increasing engagement in cooperative European security frameworks. The Gripen’s agility and advanced sensor suite made it well suited to both national defense and expeditionary operations.
  • Although Sweden remained non-aligned for much of this period, the Gripen platform itself would later see operational deployment in international missions. Swedish JAS 39 aircraft participated in reconnaissance and air policing operations during the Libyan Civil War, contributing intelligence-gathering flights under NATO command. The experience underscored the aircraft’s capability in real-world conflict scenarios. While the specific 2006 “Cat’s Paw” aircraft primarily served in air defense and training roles, it represented a fully combat-capable fighter within Sweden’s evolving expeditionary air force.
  • This 1:72 scale model in its eye-catching “Cat’s Paw” livery offers collectors a striking combination of operational credibility and unique squadron artwork, making it a standout addition for enthusiasts of modern European fighters and special commemorative schemes.

Chilling History
Format: Hardcover
The police action in Korea began to heat up very quickly, as Chinese troops began to pour over the border, and take up defensive positions. The Marines that were deployed to the area had their hands full, trying to keep even more troops from crossing, while also defending the surrounding area. The horrific weather conditions, without the proper gear, and the determination of the Marines to refuse to give ground gave way to a very volatile situation. With temperatures continuing to plumate, the biggest enemy on either side was not munitions, it was frostbite and death. Many soldiers froze to death. Chinese soldiers were issued cold weather gear that was far below what was needed for the sub-zero temperatures of the region. Soldiers from the United States were not initially given the correct gear, although there was a push to get what was needed, but many still lost fingers and toes to frostbite. Medical units were also not fully prepared for the onslaught that was coming their way. Many found themselves overwhelmed with wounded, while low on supplies and materials. This was a great read, and a real eye-opener on the deprivations that were suffered by both sides during the beginning of the Korean War. Joseph Wheelan again brings a great amount of detail, both tactical and strategic, as we look at one of the more brutal aspects of the Korean War.

Very good author.
Format: Hardcover
Chosin Reservoir is what everyone who knows someone involved in the Korean Conflict will want to read about. Wheelan is an outstanding writer, able to help you visualize the horror our military experienced. The author reveals some of the human blind spots in decision making by commanders leading to the tragedy.

Why wasn’t MacArthur court martialed?
Format: Hardcover
If there is a better book about overcoming the impossible, please send the title. Leadership at every level except the very top as well as the esprit de corps of USMC carried the day against overwhelming numbers of Chinese armies ( yes, armies - hundreds of thousand against USA and USMC troops). The Korean War doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Emperor MacArthur sat on his butt in Tokyo refusing to believe he could be wrong while Chinese armies crossed the Yalu intent on destroying the 1st MARDIV and the USA units east of the Chosin Reservoir. He spent one night in Korea during the entire war until President Truman fired his ass and rightly so.

Comprehensive analysis of the Chosin Reservoir campaign
Format: Hardcover
Excellent excellent review and analysis of the Chosin Resevoir campaign. The author examines the battle day-by-day from the Marines, Army, and Chinese Army perspective. This should be a required reference when studying the battle to understand lessons learned. So often books on this campaign are fragmented. In this book, he put the exciting descriptions of the action in the context of the broader campaign. I really appreciated how he included Task Force McLean/Faith which often gets omitted. After reading a number of books on this battle, I knew what was going to happen, but have to admit that it was hard to put this book down. HIGHLY highly recommended.
