By: Anna Colin | Series: Scratching the SurfaceA critical exploration of independent educational organizations and the hurdles in the way of remaining “alternative” with the passing of time.
Grounded in empirical research, Alternative Pedagogical Spaces: From Utopia to Institutionalization is a critical inquiry into the establishment, development, and transformation of alternative pedagogical and social spaces. Written by Anna Colin, a former director and co-founder of Open School East, an independent art school and community space founded in London in 2013, this essay-length book explores the instituting factors, organizational life cycles, and alignments and misalignments between values and practices that permeate such a project.
The essay delves into the qualities and prerequisites for what Colin calls “multi-public educational organizations.” It also scrutinizes the hurdles associated with the effort to remain alternative, including processes of habituation, temptation or pressure to scale up, ethos-bending fundraising exercises, and long tenure, as well as the plain desire for stability and sustainability.
Alternative Pedagogical Spaces proposes where to look for a reconceptualization of waiting, slowness, and longevity, and asks how these ideas may benefit cultural practice and the design of future institutions (or the redesign of existing ones). Overriding the common assumption that success equals longevity, the author searches for institutional models that resist chrononormativity, drawing from social movements, psychotherapy, biology, and permaculture.

Nice room divider!
Color: Black
Looks great and has held up well so far (but we've been very careful with it). Not too heavy to move around when needed

Beautiful!
Color: Black, Color: Black
I share a very small apartment with my daughter so my bed is in the living area. This screen not only gives me privacy, but also makes me feel like I sleep in a Japanese lantern!
At night with the bedside lamp on it glows beautifully!
It’s fairly lightweight and came fully assembled.

Japanese-Style 4-Panel Screen Room Divider: Beautiful, But...
Color: Black, Color: Black
I really like this product, and would gladly recommend it. But there are a few things you want to know before buy:
Likes 👍👍👍
- Looks great! See photos I shared.
- Works as advertised: divides your space and provides privacy, with elegance and style.
- Lightweight: It is super light and easy to move around.
Dislikes 👎👎👎
- Flimsy: according to the dictionary, that means "light and easily damaged" 🧐
- Pricey: Anything is worth what you're willing to pay for it! But I think this should be $75 tops!
- Shaky: You need to position it just right, or it could tip over really easily. I had to reposition mine because it almost got blown by a floor fan! True story 😅
- Print is on one side only which will bother some of you. I'm a recovering OCD 😂
My Verdict 🧐
- Despite its shortcomings, I like this thing, and I would buy it again! 😅 It has character and really adds to your space. So, now that you know what you're getting, you can make up your own mind! I've already bought mine 😉 Happy shopping 😊
Hope my review has helped you make a more informed buying decision 👍😊👋

Cute backdrop for videos and room separation
Color: Black
Bought this because sometimes you need emotional boundaries AND physical ones. Surprisingly sturdy, looks nice on camera, and makes a room feel more peaceful instantly. Side note I have 2 cats and 2 large dogs and it has took a couple of beatings but did not damage at all!
