THIRD REPUBLIC

(1870-1940)

The news of the capitulation of Sedan provoked the revolution of September 4,
1870 in Paris. Proclaimed at City Hall, the Republic has a provisional
government called the Government of National Defense. Threatened on the left by
the insurrection of the Commune and on the right by the monarchists, the new
regime had a difficult start. Initially head of the executive power (February
1871), Thiers was responsible for reorganizing the country before choosing its
form of government. He became President of the Republic in August 1871 and,
despite his action to liberate the territory, had to leave his post in March
1873 in the face of royalist opposition. He was then replaced by Mac-Mahon in
favor of the restoration of the monarchy but it was not restored following the
flag question. The seven-year law was then put in place in November 1873 and
then, in 1875, the fundamental laws which served as the Constitution of the
Third Republic were passed. Parliamentary system, it is characterized in
particular by the clear preponderance of the legislative power over the
executive power. Anticlerical, the Third Republic made school free, secular and
compulsory but continued colonial policy for its economic, strategic and moral
ambitions. The separation of Church and State was voted in 1905. The idea of
revenge on Germany and significant nationalism were at the heart of the
Boulangist crisis, the Panama scandal and the Dreyfus affair of 1886. -1899
while foreign policy is very active, particularly in Morocco, and the arms race
is developing. The First World War was costly for France, which only recovered
from 1920 or even 1928 for currency with the "Poincaré" franc. The crisis of
1929 was not felt until 1932 but lasted until 1939, a period during which
ministerial instability was very significant. Vacillating in 1934, the Third
Republic found a new unitary cement with anti-fascism which allowed the Popular
Front to come to power in 1936. But, paralyzed in the face of Germany, France
then got bogged down in a "funny situation". war" then experienced one of the
greatest defeats in its history in June 1940. Meeting in the National Assembly
in Vichy on July 10, 1940, the Chambers, although elected in 1936, voted full
powers to Pétain in a sort of collective suicide by 569 votes for, 80 votes
against and 18 abstentions

Translation not Literal!
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
The fist volume had a more literal translation then the second. If first Clement and Didache are in your reading list, Shepard of Hermas will fit there too!

At times it has been somewhat repetitive and tedious to read
Format: Hardcover
One of the earliest books in Christianity, The Shepherd of Hermas was probably written around 140AD, and avidly read for the first few hundred years. Likely its failure to become one of the recognized books of the Canon (Bible) had something to do with its fall-off in popularity. Today, while an Apocryphal book from the age of Apostolic Fathers, it seems arcane, and somewhat desultory. Nevertheless, one can see this book as a vision, a dream, or even an attempt to describe elements of purgatory. Both Latin and Greek copies, at least in part have been found, there are also parts missing which make reading it a bit of a challenge. At times it has been somewhat repetitive and tedious to read. I read the edition and translation from the Greek by Bart D. Ehrman: "The Apostolic Fathers Vol. II" from the Loeb Classical Library. The original author was claimed by some to be the brother of Pope Pius I. It is interesting to have a view into what the Council Fathers were looking at when deciding what to add to the Canon, and what not to add. The probings by our minds, between the dark and the daylight, are not so different a few thousand years later. How is God going to judge me and my sins? What must I do to prepare? What is within my ability and what is not? And where do I fit in His Kingdom?
