About the Artist: Al Rossi (1927–2004) came from a long line of musicians, though visual art ultimately defined his career. After World War II interrupted his studies in aeronautical engineering at Fordham University, he attended the Pratt Institute and later the Art Students League of New York. Rossi worked as an illustrator for Bantam Press and others, creating imagery for pulp fiction and midcentury crime novels. He went on to design and illustrate toys for Ideal, Matchbox, and UN before retiring to Pennsylvania in 1989, where he spent the next chapter of his life painting serene landscapes and figures. He later moved to Lake Monticello, documenting everyday life in Central Virginia.
