NYC producer Blockhead returns to the newly revived Future Archive Recordings with a fantastic new album - “Mortality Is Lit!”.

For some it would be easy to laugh off at first glance, but it’s more than just a humorous title – it’s a calling card for a record that frequently meditates on death, afterlife, endings and cycles.

While some tracks are overtly pointed remarks on popular theories about human expiration (‘All Dorks Go To Heaven’, ‘Hard Pass On The Afterlife’), this is not just a shallow and simplistic take as the theme is expanded throughout the record into a more overarching concept of things coming to natural endings, cyclic patterns continuing past the individual experience of them, and most importantly of all being at peace with these occurrences as an accepted or even celebrated part of life (‘They Got Therapy For That’, ‘Earth’s Farewell Tour).

As anyone who is familiar with Blockhead knows, even the most serious of messages always come with healthy servings of humour, irony, sarcasm, and a knowing wink. The title itself further reinforces this by using 'Lit’ as a fad synonym for excitement which is itself at the end of its own life cycle in popular culture…

For longtime fans it really wouldn’t be a Blockhead record if there wasn’t at least one horny song and here we are blessed with two for the lovers out there. Also caught up in the madness are some good old fashioned fun joints… Dolphin Lundgren’ - for example is a joyful romp through the upbeat eyes of a high dolphin; then there’s the glorious juxtaposition of Middle Eastern disco and festival vibes on Burning Man in Tehran; or the bleary eyed sentimentality of Thursday Night at Don Hills’.

The lowkey hero of the indie hip-hop and instrumental beats scenes, Blockhead first made his name on Def Jux as the go-to beats man for Aesop Rock before joining legendary UK label Ninja Tune as a solo producer and purveyor of the most exciting sample-based instrumental music this side of The Avalanches and DJ Shadow.

Indeed this year is the 20th anniversary of his seminal record Music By Cavelighton Ninja Tune, which has just seen a special reissue edition on vinyl with some unreleased tracks from the same era which will also be available by the time this album is out.

Now Blockhead is rightly considered a bona fide master in his craft after an enviable career in underground hip-hop with his signature all-you-can-eat buffet of musical samples spanning every kind of audio you can imagine, always catering to both the audience who want to dig deeper and those who just like to dance. As he creates expansive narratives mostly without words, opting for a few choice vocal samples to provide some core guidance and themes.

Contrasting between downtempo and upbeat often in the same track, he traverses eras and styles spanning jazz, funk, blues, easy listening, disco, exotica, cinematic, and tv show snaps, all crafted together with a hip-hop sampling sensibility that is truly inimitable.

For all its humour, they say that in comedy timing is everything and Mortality Is Lit!’ arrives very possibly at the optimal point in this regard, two weeks after the US presidential election. Quite likely when some perspective on cycles is needed most, regardless of what side of the aisle you find yourself on…

Solid and easy to install
Size: Standard--black
These are nice, solid wall mounts. They assembled quickly and easily, and they can hold larger bookshelf speakers like my Cambridge Soundworks M60s. Adjusting the plate to match speaker size is pretty easy, and they seem to grip the speaker tight enough that they won't fall off. The tilt option is very useful and a good feature when speakers are mounted high and need to tilt down toward the listener. Just remember to tighten the bolt on the bottom once you've positioned it where you want it. I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking for solid, well priced speaker mounts.

Sturdy solution
Size: Standard--black
I needed a way to mount rear speakers and this was the solution. They're sturdy and adjustable to fit reasonably sized speakers. They also pivot up and down and swivel so really perfect.

Nice unit
Set name: 5.1 Receiver
I'm really happy with this receiver even though I don't have any speakers hooked up to it. Not using it for a speaker setup might sound like a waste of a product to some people but honestly I'm finding plenty of value in it with it's other features. The main reason I looked into getting a receiver was so I could have multiple hdmi devices hooked up to my monitor. I looked into hdmi hubs but there are a couple reasons why I've chosen a receiver instead. 1. Reliability and ease of use. Ok, so like I said I use a monitor in my room, not a tv. Monitors don't have remotes so anytime I want to change the volume or hdmi input I have to do it manually. It's a 32 inch monitor about 3 feet to the side of my bed and it's a nice arms stretch to do so. Not a big deal and while there are plenty of hdmi hubs that offer remote changing or automatic changing I worry about the reliability of those devices. There are plenty of reviews that state their hubs stop working after some months or the automatic hdmi switching starts changing inputs randomly or getting black screens and such. I just didn't want to hassle with things like that. 2. Bluetooth connectivity. This was another feature that I was looking into. Again, there are separate devices that offer this but just like hdmi hubs you will find plenty of reliability concerns. On top of that there's audio lag and previously when I bought a bluetooth transmitter I had to return it for that reason. Nice thing about this receiver is there is an adjustment for the audio to increase or decrease the audio timing but luckily it isn't an issue and the audio seems to be timed perfectly with my bluetooth headphones. It pairs up quickly too. I haven't tried the 4k upscaling with this receiver because I use a 1440p monitor but it's nice to know that it's there. Maybe in the future I will find a use for it. There's also some neat audio presets for things like movies, music and gaming. It's actually a pretty extensive list. I suppose I should also mention that each hdmi input can be named to your liking for a nice customization feel so when you flip through them you know exactly what's connected to that input. You can even use the hdmi ports when the unit is in standby mode but you won't be able to use the bluetooth connectivity. In the end I think this was a good purchase. It's priced reasonably and I'm getting good use out of it. Sound quality is great and the customizable features are a definite plus. More expensive than getting an hdmi hub and bluetooth transmitter but I think the reliability and extra features make up for this.

Yamaha quality!
Set name: 5.1 Receiver
Excellent sound quality. Easy setup. Complicated audio menus take awhile to master, but once you do you'll be rewarded with amazing sound. Works flawless with my 4k projector and computer. 4 hdmi inputs handles all your audio and video. The auto labeling feature is amazing. I've been using it daily for two years and it performs perfectly. You'll need an external subwoofer amp which is a bit of a let down. I bought one of the small Fosi amps from Amazon that handles the bass flawlessly. Overall, an excellent receiver that will be the centerpiece of your audio and video system. Couldn't be happier. Buy it if you're on the edge of purchasing a new receiver!
